Don’t Drive Alone | Bon Voyage WEEK 3 | PASTOR DAVID PAYNE

Waiting, loneliness, and frustration are things most of us know all too well — and in our third and final week of our Bon Voyage message series Pastor David names that reality honestly. From red lights to long drives to the emotional weight of the holidays, he frames life as a journey where excitement often fades in the middle. Especially at Christmas, when joy is expected, many people quietly feel isolated. This message confronts that tension head-on and asks a deeper question: what do we do when we feel alone, even in a crowd?

Drawing from 2 Timothy 4, Pastor David shows that even the Apostle Paul experienced loneliness. Paul writes, “At my first defense, no one came to my support… but the Lord stood at my side” (2 Timothy 4:16–17). The message highlights four major triggers of loneliness—transition, rejection, opposition and separation—all of which Paul faced at the end of his life.

His story reminds us that loneliness isn’t weakness; it’s part of the human experience, even for deeply faithful people. The turning point of the message centers on Christmas itself. Jesus is called Emmanuel—“God with us” (Matthew 1:23), meaning God’s plan was never distance, but closeness. Jesus experienced rejection, betrayal, and opposition, yet He didn’t live stuck in loneliness—He used solitude to build intimacy with the Father.

The challenge is clear: stop treating God as “far off” when He has already come near. Pastor David closes with practical direction: don’t carry burdens alone, choose worship over worry, remember God’s past faithfulness, and lay down control of the destination. Loneliness loses its power when intimacy with God grows. Whether you’re in a season of transition or feeling isolated right now, this message points to real hope—you are not alone, and you never have been.
