“See4Urself” takes its name from a simple but piercing truth: someone else can introduce you to Jesus, but only your own encounter will transform you. Preaching from John 4, Dakota Payne walks through Jesus’s conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well — the moment he asks her for a drink, the moment he offers her living water, and the moment he tells her everything she ever did before she’s told him anything at all. Dakota uses two everyday illustrations, a scenic vacation photo that “doesn’t do it justice” and a friend’s rave review of a Tampa taco restaurant called Bar Taco, to make the point stick: proximity to somebody else’s encounter doesn’t equate to your own encounter. You can hear about something wonderful secondhand, but hearing about it will never be the same as experiencing it yourself.
From there the message builds around three points drawn straight from the text. Jesus sees you before you see him — he already knew about her five husbands and met her in her mess anyway, the same way, Dakota notes from his own experience coaching JV soccer, a coach can see potential in a player before that player even knows the coach’s name. Seeing Jesus changes how you see everything — illustrated through the sharp contrast between how the woman first saw Jesus (a Jew who shouldn’t be talking to her) and how the disciples, having already had their own encounter with him, saw her by the end of the chapter (not a Samaritan woman, but a child of God). And someone else’s testimony can get you to the door, but it’s up to you to step inside — a truth Dakota extends into Matthew 16 and John 6, where Jesus presses Peter and the Twelve for their own answer to “who do you say I am,” not just a repeated opinion poll.
The message closes with a direct challenge: whose faith have you been living off of — a grandparent’s, a parent’s, a friend’s testimony, a pastor’s preaching? Hearing about Jesus is supposed to lead to seeking, which leads to seeing, which leads to knowing him for yourself. The service ends in prayer, first for those being sent to tell others what they’ve seen, and then for anyone ready to move from hearing about Jesus to encountering him personally for the first time.
