Feel like you’re running on empty? In this message, “Overflow,” Pastor David kicks off Church at Home at Lifesong Church with a simple picture we’ve all lived: a tank that’s low, a mower that sputters out, a season that feels like there’s “not much left in the tank”. Using Jesus’ first miracle—the wedding at Cana—he reframes what God wants to do in us: not just refill us enough to survive, but fill us so fully that our lives spill over into the people around us.
The big idea is clear: “Allowing God’s work in us results in overflow for the lives of those around us.” Pastor David illustrates overflow through the image of a backyard bird bath: when the rain fills it to the brim, the overflow soaks the ground—and later, everything nearby grows taller and stronger because of it. That’s the promise for 2026: when God fills you, the fruit won’t stop with you—your family, relationships, and community begin to “blossom and multiply” in time. This message is for anyone feeling drained, discouraged, or spiritually empty—and for anyone hungry to enter a new year with fresh faith and renewed joy. From John 2:1–11, the message highlights the moment the celebration runs out of wine—symbolically, the moment joy runs dry .
Then come three common “leaks” that keep us from staying full: (1) letting feelings steal focus from faith, (2) taking matters into our own hands instead of trusting God, and (3) rehearsing and supersizing negativity until it becomes the biggest thing in the frame. Along the way, Pastor David anchors the teaching in Scripture, including Job 30:20, Isaiah 30:15, and reflections from Psalm 116 and Jeremiah on hardship and sorrow.
The turning point is simple and powerful: “Do whatever Jesus tells you to do.”. Jesus directs the servants to fill the ceremonial jars all the way—and the miracle happens when what’s empty (and still carrying residue) is brought to fullness. Pastor David calls us to stop settling for “enough” and start expecting God’s best—because God can transform the residue into joy that blesses everyone around us. The message closes with a prayer for God to fill us for true overflow, and an invitation to surrender to Jesus—“Take my residue… make me new”—as we step into a new year with Christ at the center.
